Rapid Update Service

How does it work?

The Rapid Update Service (RUS) is the method used to update a subscriber’s  program with the most recent items published in the Federal Register. ViaData scans the Federal Register nightly and make available to our subscribers any new information, usually the next day. New interpretation letters written by the Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS) and the Minerals Management Service are also added in this manner.

You will receive an e-mail notice advising you this new material is available. (ViaData must have your e-mail address on file.) To update your  program do the following:

Log on to the Internet using your connection.

Open your application (WinDOT)

Click on Web, Access Website

Follow the instructions in the next screen that appears

A file named rus32.hlp will be downloaded to your system. When prompted by your internet browser save the file in the same directory where WinDOT is installed.   If prompted to "Overwrite existing file" choose "Yes".    After the download is complete, go back to WinDOT and close the Web Access dialog box by clicking "OK".

Now open the code section(s) you have subscribed to and click on Updates (located on the top toolbar). You will be presented with a list of updates, with links to view the material. If regulations have been affected, the appropriate code section will be listed. Click on the link to view the new material.

If you are unable to download files from the Internet, please contact ViaData at 800-817-6649 or by e-mail for alternate methods.

If you are not a current subscriber to WinDOT you may still register for the Rapid Update Service Notification. You can then use the ViaData Search Pages to find the most recently published information.

Selecting the correct CD drive

Q: When I install my application, the 'Drives Available' box shows my CD drive, but when I double click on it, I can't select it. The 'Drive in Use' stays at C.

A: Look for the file name with the extension "stt" in your installation directory. This file is used to remember which drive was used the last time, so you don't have to keep entering it. You may have had a demonstration program installed previously on drive C, and it is remembering that. Just delete the file and restart the program. This kind of problem can also occur when a laptop is docked and undocked with a docking station, and drive letters change as a result. Same solution, just delete the "stt" file.

Installing to a Laptop

Do you have a laptop with either a CD drive or a diskette drive but not both at the same time?

You may have trouble loading the key diskette. If so, install WinDOT from the CD as normal, change to the diskette drive and copy the file on the key diskette to the WinDOT installation directory (probably C:\WINDOT). Then switch back to the CD drive and start WinDOT

How do I copy text?

Do you want to use text from WinDOT in a document you are creating? Simply highlight the text, use Control-C to copy, open your document, position the cursor and Paste using Control-V or your application's paste command. Technical standards are copyrighted by their respective organizations, please respect their copyright by not making unauthorized copies or distributions.

What if I want to order additional products?

Let us know, and we'll e-mail you a file or mail you a new key diskette that will give you access to the additional products.

Will WinDOT run on a server?

Only if you have the network version. Please call for details.

Do you continue to issue new CDs?

Yes. Periodically (2 -3 times per year) we roll all new material into a new CD release.
