Click the link in blue link or enter http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607 in your browser.  Scroll down to the paragraph titled INTRODUCTION and look for the following link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=82148 .

Close WinDOT.

Click the link and follow the instructions.  Your copy of Vista must be validated, click on the “Continue” button next to “Validation Required.” After validation is complete a new page will display, click on the “Download files below” link.  Download one of the following using the “Download”.

  • Windows6.0-KB917607-x64.msu
  • Windows6.0-KB917607-x86.msu

Click “Open With…” when the dialog box appears.  If you receive an error message “this update does not apply to your system” choose the other file.

Once the installation is complete, Open WinDOT and click on “Update Summary” on the toolbar.  The Rapid Update File should now open correctly.

For other subscribed files to open and work correctly, you must add a new subkey to the registry.  Return to the Knowledge Base article “KB917607” at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607 .

Close WinDOT.

Scroll down to “How to enable macros.”  Follow the instructions.

If you are unsure how to add the key, follow these simple steps:
Click on the start button, and in the “start search” dialog type “regedit”.  This will open the Registry Editor.

  • Double click “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE”
  • Double click “SOFTWARE”
  • Right click “MICROSOFT”
  • Click “New, Key”, type the key name “WinHelp” (without the quotes).
  • Right click the WinHelp key you just created and select “New, DWORD”, type the name “AllowProgrammaticMacros” (without the quotes, no spaces in the words.), then press “Enter”.
  • Right click on AllowProgrammaticMacros in the key, click “Modify”, enter “1” (no quotes), then click OK.
  • Close the Registry Editor. (It will automatically save your changes).

Reopen WinDOT and select a subscribed application.  Your WinDOT should now work normally.
